WORST START IN 18 YEARS
They may be worse than you thought. At the very least, the Mets are worse than they’ve been after eight games since 1992. They’ve lost four in a row, none more dramatic than Wednesday’s 6-5 defeat to the Rockies at Coors Field. After the Mets rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning, Chris Ianetta hit a walkoff home run off Jenrry Mejia in the bottom of the 10th. The Mets fell to 2-6, and while there are still 154 games to play, encouraging signs are hard to find at the moment. The Mets haven’t led at the end of an inning -- or gotten a quality start from a starting pitcher -- since Friday. Jon Niese gave up five runs on nine hits in five innings Wednesday and Mets hitters went just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. After Rod Barajas made it 5-4 with an RBI single in the eighth, the Mets tied it on a sac fly by Luis Castillo in the top of the ninth. Gary Matthews Jr. led off the ninth inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Ianetta. He scored on Castillo’s fly to center. The Mets left the go-ahead run on third when Alex Cora lined out to second to end the top of the 10th. And Ianetta led off the bottom of the inning by drilling Mejia's 2-1 pitch into the left center field stands. (NJ.com)
