OLLIE SOLID BUT BATS STIFLED IN CINCINNATI
Oliver Perez started for the Mets today, and he pitched pretty well, throwing 108 pitches in six innings and allowed two runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out four. Perez allowed a leadoff home run to Drew Stubbs. The Mets offense couldn’t get much going against Reds starter Mike Leake, who gave up one earned run on four hits in six innings. Jenrry Mejia, who entered tonight’s game not being scored upon in nine of eleven appearances, pitched a scoreless seventh inning. The Mets had a chance to take the lead in the seventh inning off of Mike Lincoln when Ike Davis led off with a double, but after Jeff Francoeur advanced Davis to third with a flyout, Rod Barajas popped out, and then Arthur Rhodes relieved Lincoln and struck out pinch hitter Fernando Tatis. Fernando Nieve gave the Mets two scoreless innings, who made his 16th appearance in the Mets 26th game. Pedro Feliciano faced four right handed hitters in the tenth inning, and allowed a hit to Scott Rolen and a walk to Orlando Cabrera, but got out of the jam unscathed. The Mets had two on with two outs in the 11th inning, but Nick Massett struck out Ike Davis to strand the two baserunners. With one out in the 11th inning, Manny Acosta allowed a game winning, solo home run to Laynce Nix. Jason Bay went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts, and is now hitting .255 on the year. …Jose Reyes had a couple of good at bats tonight, but right now, his swing is way to slow and long…he looks antsy in the batters box to me…i wonder if he’s trying to do too much out of the third spot in the lineup, but he isn’t going to see too many fastballs if Bay isn’t hitting behind him…he did get on in the 11th and I was waiting for him to steal second in that spot to try and make something happen, and he didn’t, and I think in prior years, he would have… …Perez looked pretty good tonight…he was effectively wild, if that’s possible…he touched 92 mph a couple of times, but was mostly in the upper 80s with his fastball…He had thrown just 55 pitches in the middle of his fifth inning, but started to stagger and it looked like the Ollie Bomb was going to explode, but he hung in there and gave the Mets a chance to win… …the Mets had a couple of chances to score some runs and take leads, but the offense staggered, making some unproductive outs, ultimately going just 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position on the night…..this wasn’t a badly played game for the Mets as they took advantage of some miscues by the Reds, but they lacked the big hit late in this game, which ultimately cost them, and it’s even more frustrating because their eight game winning streak and all of that positive energy seems to be light years behind us right now, and i think a win tonight would have done wonders for this team after last night’s loss in Philly… …i seem to recall watching Arthur Rhodes pitch when i was in high school, and here he is for the Reds, i am now thirty, and he still throws 95 mph…(Mets.com)
