Bay out until at least April 9th

After hoping all winter that his post-concussion symptoms were gone forever, then rejoicing to find that they were, Jason Bay felt a stabbing sting in his left side during batting practice Tuesday, and the beginning of his season was ruined."It was devastating at first,” said Bay, who the Mets placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, retroactive to March 25.
He is eligible to return April 9.“You put in all that time in the offseason. You come off a concussion. And then all of a sudden you come into spring and the last week or so of spring I felt like I was starting to catch a stride and was getting excited. Then, all of a sudden, to have a derailment, it was a tough day yesterday.”
A rib cage strain is a tricky injury, and can heal slowly. Bay, who returned to New York Wednesday for an examination and cortisone shot, was hopeful that his was mild, and that an April 9 return was a realistic goal. “The silver lining, I guess, is it's not, knock on wood, that bad and there will still be a full season ahead of me,” he said. “It’s not like I cough and I wince over in pain.”Last season, the first year of a four-year, $66 million contract, Bay hit just six home runs and missed most of the second half after suffering the concussion.
