One thing the Mets have always been able to do is win on Opening Day. It's something we Mets fans have come to expect. We anticipate that first game of the season perhaps more than any other fanbase in sports- heck, entering tonight the Mets were 32-9 on Opening Day.
So, Mets fans packed Sun Life Stadium in Miami ready to keep the Spring Training momentum alive. But, the Marlins had other plans.
One of the great nemesis's of the past two losing seasons for the Mets has been the Grand Slam. They were unable to escape that nemesis Friday night as veteran John Buck broke up Mike Pelfrey's shout-out with the classic 'four-run home run' in the fourth inning.
Things went downhill from there as the Mets fell 6-2, starting the season on an off note.
Josh Johnson was stellar as usual, keeping New York hitless until the 7th, when the Mets rallied for two runs behind doubles from Willie Harris and Carlos Beltran. The Mets were not in the game after that.
Notables:
- Carlos Beltran went 1 for 4 in his return, scoring a run and picking up his first RBI of the season.- Jose Reyes and David Wright both went 0 for 4. Wright struck out twice and left two men on base.- New acquisition Willie Harris went 2 for 4 with a run scored.- 30 year-old relief pitcher Blaine Boyer gave up a hit but retired two in a scoreless Mets debut.- In two innings of relief, Pedro Beato gave up 3 hits but held the marlins to no runs.
